Ham Test: All You Need to Know

A Ham Test or Radio Amateur Examination is an official and legally approved test aimed at wanting to obtain a federal license to legally operate an Amateur Radio Transmitter.

Preparation for the Exam

Preparation of the Ham test involves taking a Ham Test Course online. This course gives the student an in-depth knowledge of the major topics involved such as basic Electronics, Radio Theory, Receivers, Transmitters and Regulations and Rules of Amateur Radio. Additionally it helps acquaint the person with the actual Ham Test question formats and topics.

Procedure of the Exam

On the day of the actual exam, the examinee is tested on Regulations, Rules and Operating Practices of Amateur Radio. He must pass a test of 35 multiple choice questions and achieve a minimum score of 70% to obtain his license. The exam generally lasts for a few hours.

Types of Ham Tests

• Technician Class License (Referred as ‘Tech’): This license provides access to all Amateur Radio frequencies above 30 MHz, however, with limited privileges on certain bands and modes.
• General Class License (Referred as ‘General’): This license provides access to all Amateur Radio frequencies above 30 MHz, with no limitations on operating modes or privileges.
• Amateur Extra Class License (Referred as ‘Extra’): This license provides access to all Amateur Radio frequencies above 30 MHz, with the most operating privileges available on all Amateur Radio bands.

Risks Involved

Failing the exam will result in having to retake the exam again. There is no additional charge for retaking the exam, however, this may include additional time and effort. It is wise to prepare for the exam well to ensure a successful passing grade.

When to take Ham Test?

The best time to take the Ham Test is as soon as you feel comfortable with the studied material. Also, the sooner you get licensed, the quicker you can get onto the radio and start enjoying the hobby.
