What is an Estradiol Blood Test?
An estradiol blood test is used to measure the amount of the hormone estradiol in a person's blood. Estradiol, also known as estrogen, is a hormone predominantly produced in the ovaries but also found in smaller quantities in the adrenal glands and placenta (during pregnancy). This hormone plays an essential role in sexual development and functioning, fertility, bone development, and menopause.
Testing for estradiol measures the level of the hormone in the blood. Doctors may use an estradiol blood test to help diagnose or monitor conditions that affect the production or metabolism of the hormone.
Preparation
No specific preparations are needed for an estradiol blood test, but your doctor may give you instructions withdrawing from certain medications prior to the procedure. Patients should follow any instructions regarding fasting, as well as any other instructions.
Procedure
Estradiol blood tests involve drawing a small blood sample from an artery or vein, usually from the arm.
- A healthcare provider will first clean the area and wrap a band around the top of the arm to make the vein swell with blood.
- Then, a needle is inserted into the arm, and the sample is drawn into a vial.
- The needle is then removed, and the sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis.
The entire process typically takes less than 10 minutes and is relatively painless.
Types of Estradiol Blood Tests
Doctors may order one of two types of estradiol blood tests: a total estradiol test or a free estradiol test.
- Total estradiol test: This test measures the concentration of all forms of estradiol. It is usually ordered to monitor the effectiveness of therapeutic medications or to screening for infertility.
- Free estradiol test: This test measures only the amount of estradiol that is not bound to proteins. It is often ordered to look for signals of certain types of cancer or to monitor the progress of medical treatments.
Risks
Most people experience no complications or risks from estradiol blood tests. Slight bruising may appear at the test site, but this is usually temporary.

- Diagnose male and female infertility issues
