What is the Coronavirus?
The Coronavirus is a family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a newly discovered and rapidly spreading virus that was first detected in Wuhan, China in December 2019.
Why is the Coronavirus a Concern?
COVID-19 is more deadly than the common cold and flu and must be taken seriously. It spreads mainly through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, and speaking. It can also be spread through contact with contaminated surfaces. The virus is highly contagious and there is currently no vaccine.
Prevention and Treatment
The best way to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus is to wash your hands regularly, avoid close contact with people who are sick, and stay at home if you are feeling unwell. If you do become infected, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends rest and plenty of fluids. If your symptoms become more severe, contact your doctor.
Types of Coronaviruses
Coronaviruses are classified into four groups named OC43, SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and NL63. The novel COVID-19 virus is from a new group that has yet to be named. All four groups have been known to cause illness in humans.
Risks of Coronavirus
COVID-19 has been classified as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). This means that it is spreading quickly across the world and it is difficult to control. People who are at higher risk of severe illness from the virus include older adults and those with underlying medical conditions.
