Clean Catch Urine Sample

A clean catch urine sample is a procedure used to collect a urine sample in order to test it for any infection or disease. It is also commonly known as a mid-stream urine sample. The clean catch urine sample collection method helps to prevent bacteria from the skin of the genital area from contaminating the urine sample.

Preparation for a Clean Catch Urine Sample

Preparation for a clean catch urine sample is important for proper collection of a urine sample. The following steps should be followed before collecting the sample:

  • Empty your bladder before you are ready to start the collection process.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water.
  • Open the package that contains the sterile container.
  • Clean the genital area with the antiseptic cloth provided in the package.
  • Start to pass urine into the toilet bowl.
  • Once the urine stream turns warm, collect a sample into the container.
  • Let the urine stream complete.
  • Stop passing urine and cap the container.
  • Label the sample with your name, date and time that the sample was collected.

Types of Clean Catch Urine Samples

There are two types of clean catch urine samples commonly used in diagnosis and disease monitoring. The two types are:

  • Catherized Urine Sample: This type of sample is used when the patient is unable to provide a clean catch sample due to physical or mental disability. This sample is collected using a catheter that is inserted in the bladder.
  • Suprapubic Aspiration Urine Sample: This type of sample is used if the patient is unable to provide a clean catch sample due to lack of control of the bladder. This sample is collected through a needle that is inserted into the bladder, allowing the urine to be aspirated into the collection container.

Why Clean Catch Urine Samples

Clean catch urine samples are used to help diagnose certain types of urinary tract infections, including bladder or kidney infections, as well as other conditions such as diabetes and prostate cancer. Clean catch samples help to confirm or rule out infection or other health conditions that may otherwise be difficult to detect.

When is Clean Catch Urine Sample Done?

Clean catch urine samples are done when a doctor or healthcare provider suspects a urinary tract infection or other condition. These samples are typically ordered when a patient has symptoms such as pain or burning with urination, or if they have had recurrent urinary tract infections.

Risks of Clean Catch Urine Sample

Clean catch urine samples are generally safe and are not associated with any significant risks. The only potential risk is discomfort due to the antiseptic being used to clean the area prior to the sample collection.
