Aspergillosis Precipitin Test
Aspergillosis precipitin test is a laboratory based test that can be used to detect the presence of Aspergillus fungus in a patient's body. It helps in diagnosing an infection caused by this fungus, known as Aspergillosis. This can be a life-threatening disease if left untreated.
Preparation for Aspergillosis Precipitin
The Aspergillosis precipitin test can be performed on a sample of blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid or body tissue. The sample is then tested for the presence of antibodies to the Aspergillus fungus. These antibodies will cause a reaction with the fungus that can be seen in the test results.
Procedure for Aspergillosis Precipitin
In the Aspergillosis precipitin test, a sample of the patient's blood or tissue is collected. The sample is then placed in a laboratory where it is tested for antibody reactions to the Aspergillus fungus. The antibody reaction causes the fungus to precipitate out of the sample, producing a visible yellow color. This reaction is then observed and recorded in order to confirm the presence of Aspergillosis.
Types of Aspergillosis
- Invasive Aspergillosis: Invasive Aspergillosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening form of Aspergillosis. It occurs when the infection spreads deep into the body, such as to the lungs or central nervous system.
- Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA): ABPA is a type of hypersensitivity reaction to the Aspergillus fungus. It usually affects those with underlying respiratory conditions such as asthma or cystic fibrosis.
- Aspergilloma: Aspergilloma is a type of Aspergillosis infection that occurs when the fungus grows in a localized area in the lungs or sinuses.
Risks and Prevalence of Aspergillosis
Aspergillosis is most common in individuals with a weakened immune system or those who are receiving immunosuppressive treatment. It can also affect those who have undergone an organ transplant or chemotherapy. Cases of Aspergillosis have been most commonly seen in individuals with cystic fibrosis or other chronic lung conditions.
Aspergillosis is also more commonly seen in warm and humid climates, due to the favorable conditions for growth of the Aspergillus fungus. Inhaling spores of this fungus in the air may also lead to development of an Aspergillosis infection.
