ARM MRI Scan
An MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging arm scan is an imaging procedure to look at the arm and its tissue and organs. It is a noninvasive imaging procedure that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to generate detailed images of the arm and its soft tissues.
Preparation
Before an arm MRI scan, the patient should wear comfortable clothing, preferably without any metal pieces. In some cases, they may be asked to remove piercings, jewelry, and other objects that contain metal. Metals can cause artifacts in the images. Generally, people can eat and drink before the test without any restriction. However, there can be some restrictions regarding the consumption of food or drinks that contain iron.
Procedure
The patient may be required to change into a sterile gown. During the procedure, the patient is placed lie on the table, and the arm is inserted into a doughnut-shaped machine. The machine produces a magnetic field around the arm. Using the field, the machine creates a scanning pattern to create images of the arm's different tissues and organs. Depending on the type of scan, a contrast material or dye might be injected into the patient's body before the scan.
Types
There are three main types of arm MRI scans:
- Traditional MRI scans: This procedure takes more time as the scanning pattern is more complex
- Angiography MRI scans: This procedure is conducted to examine the blood vessels in the arm
- Functional MRI scans: This procedure is used to scan the nerves in the arm
Risks
The arm MRI scan is generally safe. The procedure does not involve any radiation or any other weapons, and is mostly painless. Patients may feel some pressure during the scan, due to the need to remain still. In rare cases, they may experience discomfort due to the magnetic field.
Why is an ARM MRI Scan Done?
An arm MRI scan is used to detect conditions such as fractures, torn ligaments, tears in tendons, cartilage damage, tendonitis, tumors, and other disorders in the arm or shoulder area. Doctors may also use this procedure to diagnose joint or muscle pain, and to identify a variety of conditions or abnormalities.
When is an ARM MRI Scan needed?
A patient should get an arm MRI scan when they experience chronic pain or swelling in the arm. The scan can be used to determine the cause of pain and swelling. This procedure is also used to diagnose shoulder instability, shoulder impingement, tendinitis, rotator cuff tear, and other conditions.
