An immunofixation test, or immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE), is a laboratory test used to identify the presence and amount of certain proteins, such as immunoglobulins, in the body. Immunofixation can help in the diagnosis and treatment of certain diseases, including myeloma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
Preparation for Immunofixation (IFE) Blood Test
No special preparation is needed prior to an immunofixation test. You simply need to provide a blood sample for the test.
Procedure for Immunofixation (IFE) Blood Test
- A blood sample is taken and added to a specialized gel.
- The gel is placed in a container and electricity is passed through the gel.
- The immunoglobulins become separated into different bands because of their varying sizes, shapes, and electrical charges.Each band contains different types of immunoglobulins.
- A stain is added to the gel to help distinguish the different bands.
- The bands are then examined under a microscope.
Types of Immunoglobulins Detected with Immunofixation
The immunoglobulins that can be detected use immunofixation are:
- IgA – involved in immunity
- IgG – involved in immunity
- IgM – involved in immunity
- IgD – involved in immunity
- IgE – involved in allergies
- Light chain immunoglobulins – associated with myeloma
Risks of Immunofixation (IFE) Blood Test
There are few risks associated with the immunofixation test. The most common risks associated with the taking of a blood sample are pain, bruising, or infection at the collection site.
Why Is an Immunofixation (IFE) Blood Test Performed?
An immunofixation test is typically performed when a doctor suspects a person may have an antibody-related disorder, such as multiple myeloma or chronic lymphocytic leukemia. It can also be done to detect excessive amounts of one type of immunoglobulin or as part of a disease-monitoring program for people who have already been diagnosed with an antibody-related disorder.
When Is an Immunofixation (IFE) Blood Test Performed?
An immunofixation test is most commonly ordered when a person has abnormal results on other laboratory tests, such as a complete blood count (CBC), or in people who have signs and symptoms of an antibody-related disorder. The test is also ordered periodically to monitor people who have been diagnosed with an antibody-related disorder.
