Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
What is Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma?
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system. It is a type of cancer that starts in cells called lymphocytes, which are part of the body's defense system against infection and disease. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a form of cancer that affects any part of the body, including the blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, liver, or other tissues.
Types of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
There are several different types of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Some of the most common types of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are:
- Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: This is the most common type of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and it typically begins in the lymph nodes. It is an aggressive cancer, meaning it grows and spreads quickly.
- Follicular lymphoma: This is the second most common type of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is often slow-growing and may not require treatment right away.
- Mantle cell lymphoma: This type of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is rare and usually affects men over the age of 50. It is an aggressive cancer that spreads quickly.
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia: This is the most common type of leukemia, and it is slow-growing. It is more common in older adults and can affect the blood, bone marrow, and lymph nodes.
- Burkitt lymphoma: This is an aggressive type of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and it is more common in tropical and subtropical regions. It typically affects children and young adults.
- Marginal zone lymphoma: This type of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma typically affects elderly adults. It is slow-growing but can become aggressive over time.
- Mycosis Fungoides: This is a rare type of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that usually affects the skin and is slow-growing.
