Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD)
What Is Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD)?
Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) is a condition that affects both men and women. It is characterized by an absence or diminished feelings of sexual desire, which can lead to distress, problems in relationships, and even depression. HSDD typically includes a lack of sexual fantasies and thoughts, along with a lack of arousal when faced with sexual stimuli. Symptoms of HSDD vary from person to person, and while some experience a complete absence of sexual desire, others may find it difficult to initiate or maintain contact.
Signs and Symptoms of HSDD
- Lack of interest in sex and avoiding sexual activities
- Reduced sexual fantasies and thoughts
- Inability to become aroused when engaging in sexual activities
- Inability to become aroused by mental or visual sexual stimuli
- Lack of desire even in the presence of a willing partner
- Distress due to the lack of sexual desire
- Relationship problems due to the lack of sexual desire
- Feelings of guilt or low self-esteem due to the lack of sexual desire
Causes of HSDD
HSDD can be caused by a variety of factors, including physical, psychological, and interpersonal issues. On the physical side, certain medical conditions, medications, and substances can lead to a decreased libido, while hormonal imbalances can also play a role. Psychological factors like anxiety, stress, and depression can also lead to a decrease in sexual desire, as can relationship issues.
Treatment of HSDD
Treatment for HSDD depends on the underlying cause and may include therapy, medications, lifestyle changes, or a combination of these. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of therapy that can help address psychological issues that may be underlying the disorder. Medications used to treat HSDD include antidepressants, testosterone, and bupropion. Lifestyle changes like exercise, stress management, improved communication, and reducing the use of alcohol can also help improve sexual desire. In severe cases, medical procedures like hormone replacement therapy or nerve stimulation may be recommended.
