Fever caused by common cold is a viral infection caused by over 200 types of virus. It is the most common type of virus and affects people of all ages. The symptoms of common cold may be mild to severe and can last up to two weeks. Fever is one of the most common symptoms of a cold and is usually linked to the body’s attempt to fight off the virus.
The temperature of people with common cold usually increases to 38°C to 39°C (102-103°F). In some cases, the temperature may be even higher but this is usually not cause for concern. The fever typically lasts for two to seven days and can be accompanied by other symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and a sore throat.

The goal of treatment is to reduce the fever and relieve any other symptoms. There are several ways to do this:
- Rest and drink plenty of fluids to help keep your body hydrated and to reduce fever.
- Take over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to reduce fever.
- Use a cool washcloth on the forehead or a cold compress. This will help bring the fever down.
- Use a humidifier to relieve coughing, sneezing and other nasal congestion.
- Avoid foods that are high in fat, sugar or dairy, which can aggravate the infection.
- Stay away from smoke and other irritants that may worsen a cold.
Most people with a common cold will recover without any further treatment. However, if the fever persists for more than a few days or if it is accompanied by chest pain, difficulty in breathing or any other severe symptom, then seek medical advice immediately.
