What is Severe Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis?

Severe Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (SSAR) is an extremely common form of allergy that is sensitive to the environment, often found in spring or fall with symptoms worsening in periods of high pollen counts. It is characterised by sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose and eyes, and eye itching and redness. In severe cases, even hearing may be affected, with lasting nasal obstruction.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Severe Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

In order to accurately diagnose SEVERE Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis, a person must have at least three different symptoms of the condition for six or more months of the year. A physical examination can generally reveal nasal polyps, swollen nasal mucosa, or other signs and symptoms of SSAR. In order to treat SSAR, the first line of treatment is usually a symptomatic approach using over-the-counter antihistamines (such as loratadine or fexofenadine), decongestants (such as pseudoephedrine), and intranasal corticosteroids. For more severe or persistent cases, allergy desensitization injections can be used to reduce sensitization to outdoor allergens. In addition to medication, other lifestyle changes can help reduce the symptoms of SSAR. These include avoiding outdoor activity in high pollen count seasons, keeping windows closed when inside, and wearing a mask when outside.
