Severe Scalp Psoriasis
What is Severe Scalp Psoriasis?
Severe Scalp Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by scaly, thick patches of skin and scalp itching and burning. It affects men and women equally, and is a common skin condition. Symptoms can range from light scaling of the scalp to extensive redness, thick scales, and broken skin.
What Causes Scalp Psoriasis?
The exact cause of scalp psoriasis is unknown, but it is believed to be caused by an abnormal immune system response, which leads to a build-up of skin cells. Certain triggers, such as stress, changes in the weather, skin injuries, and certain medications, can cause flare-ups of severe scalp psoriasis.
How Is Severe Scalp Psoriasis Treated?
Treatment for severe scalp psoriasis may include topical medications, scalp injections, light therapy, and oral medications. Topical medications such as creams, gels, ointments, and shampoos can be used to treat mild scalp psoriasis. Corticosteroid scalp solutions, emollients, and tar-based shampoos are often used for moderate to severe scalp psoriasis. For more severe cases, scalp injections of steroids, topical calcineurin inhibitors, or light therapy may be recommended. Oral medications such as methotrexate and cyclosporine may also be used to help control severe scalp psoriasis.
At-Home Care Tips
In addition to following your doctor’s prescribed treatment plan, there are several at-home care tips you can use to manage severe scalp psoriasis:
- Use mild shampoos and soaps, and avoid any that contain lye, alcohol, or drying ingredients.
- Apply a humidifier in your home to help keep skin hydrated.
- Pat the scalp dry after showering or bathing.
- Avoid tight hairstyles, and wash hair gently.
- Try to keep the scalp cool and out of the sun.
- Reduce stress and take regular breaks.
