Psoriasis
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a long-term skin condition that causes red, scaly patches to appear on the skin.
Common Symptoms of Psoriasis
- Dry, scaly skin patches ranging in size from small to large.
- Thick, pitted nails.
- Red patches with silvery scales on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.
- Itching, burning, or soreness on the affected skin areas.
- Inflammation and swelling in and around the affected skin area.
Causes of Psoriasis
The exact cause of psoriasis is unknown, but it is thought to be related to an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Psoriasis is usually diagnosed based on a physical examination of the affected skin areas. Treatment for psoriasis typically includes topical medications, light therapy, and medications that suppress the immune system.
Managing Psoriasis
People with psoriasis can do many things to manage and control their symptoms, such as:
- Moisturize regularly to prevent dry skin.
- Avoid harsh soaps or detergents.
- Avoid scratching or picking at affected areas.
- Apply sunscreen before going outdoors.
- Take warm baths with Epsom salt.
- Try stress relief techniques, such as meditation or yoga.
