A mixture of CaO and `NH_4Cl` is used to dry crystals of complexes containing `NH_3` as ligands. The water liberated by moist crystals is absorbed by CaO. This moisture helps in the chemical reaction between CaO and `NH_4Cl` to create an atmosphere of `NH_3`which prevents the decomposition of highly unstable complexes i.e., ammine salts.
