The fossil of Peking man was discovered from the lime stone caves of Choukoutien near Peking while that of Heidelberg man was discovered in mid-Pleistocene. All these three fossils come under the category of Homo erectus.

Homo erectus appeared about 1.7 million years ago in the middle Pleistocene. Herectus evolved from Homo habilis. He was about 1.5-1.8 metres tall. He had erect posture.
