Proteins: Proteins are constituents of all the body cells of most important substance that regulate metabolic processes.

The basic structure of proteins is a chain of amino acids that contains carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. They are essential for the growth and repair of muscles and other body tissues. The daily requirement of protein by our body is about 20 g.

Sources: The best sources are egg, milk, meat, poultry beef and milk products. Grains, fruits and vegetables are the sources of incomplete proteins.

Functions:

(a) The cells of muscles, tendons, ligaments are maintained.

(b) Proteins are the main component of muscles, organs and glands.

(c) These are required for the formation of hormones, enzymes and haemoglobin.

Recommendation: Experts recommend that 20% of the total daily calories should come from proteins. It is important to note that exercise is the key to stimulating growth of new muscle tissues. High intake of proteins creates extra load on the body especially kidney and liver due to disposal of nitrogen.
