Edla showed great trust in him by letting him stay at their manor on the Christmas Eve. But the news about the robbery had left her dejected. So she was overjoyed when she reached home to find the package and the letter left by the peddler. This gesture of appreciation from the peddler made her happy.
It showed that Edla's trust was not broken by peddler -her goodness had paid off and peddler had transformed -she will not have to suffer criticism for trying to help a thief.
As soon as Edla opened the package of the gift, the contents came into view. She found a small rattrap with three wrinkled ten kronor notes and a letter addressed to her. The peddler wanted to be nice in return as she had been so nice to him all day long. He did not want her to be embarrased at the Christmas season by a thief.
The peddler left for Edla a rattrap and the money he had stolen. He had requested her to return the money to its owner. Edla was happy to see the gift at the thought that the peddler had repented over his misdeed.
