Hyperactivity has long been part of the human condition, although hyperactive behaviour has not always been seen as problematic.

The terminology used to describe the symptoms of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, has gone through many changes over history, including "minimal brain damage", "minimal brain dysfunction", "learning/behavioral disabilities" and "hyperactivity". In the second edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, known as DSM-II , the condition was called "Hyperkinetic Reaction of Childhood". It was in the 1980 DSM-III that "ADD with or without hyperactivity" was introduced. In 1987 this label was further refined to "ADHD " in the DSM-III-R and subsequent editions, including the current DSM-5.
