The biology of obsessive–compulsive disorder refers biologically based theories about the mechanism of OCD. Neuroanatomically, functional and structural neuroimaging studies implicate the prefrontal cortex , basal ganglia , insula, and posterior cingulate cortex. Genetic and neurochemical studies implicate glutamate and monoamine neurotransmitters, especially serotonin and dopamine.
