Mongol Invasions
- The Mongol Empire carried out several invasions of the Indian subcontinent from 1221 to 1327.
- In c.1221 CE, Temujin, popularly known as Chengiz Khan, the leader of the Mongols, started invading Central Asia and destroying the Khwarizm empire.
- In the 1280s Duwa Khan was second in command of Kaidu Khan. He was active in Afghanistan and attempted to extend Mongol rule into India.
- The Chagatai Khanate invaded Punjab in 1292, but their advance guard under Ulghu was defeated and taken prisoner by the founder of the Khilji Dynasty, Jalaluddin.
- Chagatai armies were beaten by the Delhi Sultanate several times in 1296–1297.
- The most significant defeat occurred during the battle of Kili in 1299 Fought between the Chagatai army led by Qutlug and the Delhi sultanate army led by Alauddin Khilji.
- Alauddin established a huge permanent standing army to satisfy his ambition of conquest and to protect the country from Mongol invasion.
- In 1327 the Chagatai Mongols under Tarmashirin laid siege to Delhi and he only lifted it when he was paid a huge ransom by the Tughlaqs.
- Tarmahirin led the invasion of India during the reign of Muhammad Bin Tughluq.
