Option 1 : Mean
The mean is the measure of central tendency most likely to be affected by an extreme value. Mean is the only measure of central tendency which depends on all the values as it is derived from the sum of the values divided by the number of observations. The median depends only on one or two middle most values.
- One shortcoming of the mean is that means are easily affected by extreme values.
- Measures that are not that affected by extreme values are called resistant.
- Measures that are affected by extreme values are called sensitive.
- Outliers can significantly increase or decrease the mean when they are included in the calculation. Since all values are used to calculate the mean, they can be affected by extreme outliers.
Hence mean is a measure of central tendency that is affected by the extremely large and extremely small values in the data.
| Harmonic mean | The harmonic mean is a type of numerical average. It is calculated by dividing the number of observations by the reciprocal of each number in the series. |
| Median | The median is the middle number in a sorted, ascending, or descending, list of numbers and can be more descriptive of that data set than the average. |
| Mode | Mode is defined as the value that is repeatedly occurring in a given set. It is one of the three measures of central tendency, apart from mean and median. |
