Option 2 : Respiratory stimulation

Concept:

  • Morphine is an opioid medication. An opioid is sometimes called a narcotic. Morphine works by blocking pain signals from travelling along the nerves to the brain.
  • Morphine is used to treat moderate to severe pain.
  • Most common unwanted effects of morphine use is constipation.
  • Other common side effects include CNS depression, nausea, vomiting and urinary retention because of that usually morphine is administered along with anti-emetic. ex: Ondansetron.
  • Respiratory depression is among the more serious adverse reactions with opiate use that is especially important to monitor in the post-operative population.
  • Other reported side effects include lightheadedness, sedation and dizziness.
  • Other effects include euphoria, dysphoria, agitation, dry mouth, anorexia, and biliary tract spasm, which is why some physicians will avoid morphine when patients present with right upper quadrant and suspect possible biliary tract pathology.
  • Morphine can also affect cardiovascular system and some patients can experience pruritis, utricaria, edema and other skin rashes.
  • Extreme caution is necessary with severe respiratory depression and asthma exacerbation cases since morphine can further decrease the respiratory drive.
  • So morphine doesn't cause respiratory stimulation instead it worsen respiratory status.
