Option 4 : Bagassosis
Concept:
- Damage to the lungs caused by dusts or fumes or noxious substances inhaled by the workers in certain specific occupations is known as "Occupational lung disease".
- Occupational lung diseases are classified as hypersensitivity pneunmonitis and pneumoconiasis. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis or extrinsic allergic alveolitis is caused by inhalation of organic materials. Pneumoconiosis is caused by inhalation of mineral dust.
- Bagassosis belongs to hypersensitivity pneumonitis. It develops in a patient due to exposure and inhalation of bagasse ( the residual fibrous material after sugar is extracted from sugar cane).
- The most effective treatment is removing the patient from the offending dust.
- Silicosis is a long-term lung disease caused by inhaling large amounts of crystalline silica dust, usually over many years. It is a substance naturally found in certain types of stone, rock ,sand and clay.
- Asbestosis is a lung disease caused by breathing in particles of asbestos (a group of minerals that take the form of tiny fibers).
- Byssinosis is a lung disease caused by breathing in cotton dust or dusts from other vegetable fibers such as flax, hemp or sisal while at work.
