- Sucking roots are also called as haustoria. These are small roots which penetrate the host tissue.
- The haustoria of partial parasite penetrate and make contact with the host xylem tissue since they are in need of water and nutrients.
- Whereas the haustoria of total parasite make contact with the phloem tissue since they are in need of photosynthetic materials.
- Cuscuta is a total stem parasite. It has no leaves.
- Its haustoria penetrate both xylem and phloem. They absorb both water and prepared food from the host plant.
