Option 1 : Optically rarer

The different media are said to be optically denser if they have a higher refractive index and optically rarer if they have a lower refractive index. These terms are not absolute but relative terms. Optical density is not the same as mass density, so an object which has a lower mass density will not necessarily have a lower optical density.
