The integumentary system has a variety of functions in the animals:
- It protects the animal body from damages such as loss of water and any other external damage.
- It acts as a site for the synthesis of Vitamin D (Chole-Calciferol) in case of most of the vertebrates which are exposed to sunlight.
- It helps in the regulation of body temperature in most of the animals.
- It helps in the excretion of waste also from the body.
- It acts as an attachment site for various sensory receptors used for detection of various sensations such as pain, pressure etc.
- It contributes to protecting the deeper tissues in the animal body in most of the cases.
