  • Canals are difficult to construct in Peninsular India because of the Rocky region of the Peninsular and also rainfall is highly seasonal there, therefore Tank Irrigation is popular in the Southern region of India.
  • Tank irrigation is useful in the areas where surface repels rainwater and do not permit it to infiltrate (soak into) the ground that is tank irrigation is mainly in the areas with impervious surface layers.
  • The Well and Tube Well irrigation is the most popular irrigation system in India and it is mainly found in the northern region of India where Uttar Pradesh is having the largest area under well irrigation. It is followed by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Bihar.
  • Well irrigation is much older in India as compared to the Tank Irrigation system and it also requires sufficient groundwater reserves.
