    • Macronutrients - They are required in large amounts in plant body. These include carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulphur, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
    • Micronutrients - These are required in very small amounts and are called trace elements. They include iron, manganese, copper, molybdenum, zinc, boron, chlorine and nickel.
  • Some other beneficial elements may also be present in higher plants like sodium, silicon, cobalt and selenium.

  • Oxygen -
    • It is obtained mainly from CO2 and H2O.
    • It is used up in synthesizing various organic compounds like glucose (C6H12O6).
  • Phosphorus -
    • It is absorbed by plants from soil.
    • It is required for the formation of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and proteins.
    • It is also present in cell membranes.
  • Magnesium -
    • It is an important element for the formation of chlorophyll molecule.
    • It also activates various enzymes related to photosynthesis and respiration.
