- Micronutrients - These are required in very small amounts and are called trace elements. They include iron, manganese, copper, molybdenum, zinc, boron, chlorine and nickel.
- Some other beneficial elements may also be present in higher plants like sodium, silicon, cobalt and selenium.
- Oxygen -
- It is obtained mainly from CO2 and H2O.
- It is used up in synthesizing various organic compounds like glucose (C6H12O6).
- Phosphorus -
- It is absorbed by plants from soil.
- It is required for the formation of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and proteins.
- It is also present in cell membranes.
- Magnesium -
- It is an important element for the formation of chlorophyll molecule.
- It also activates various enzymes related to photosynthesis and respiration.
