Option 4 : Engagement phase
The 5 E's learning model, developed by 'Rodger Bybee' is an instructional model based on five stages which are engaging, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation.
- This constructivist model of learning ensures the active involvement of learners in the teaching-learning process.
The 5 E's learning model is briefly explained below:
| Engagement phase |
- The students are engaged in the classroom through different learning tasks.
- This learning task may be an activity, showing any surprising event, peculiar examples, etc., where students will get an opportunity to relate their previous knowledge with the existing ideas.
- In this phase, the teacher basically involves the students in the learning process.
|
| Exploration Phase |
- The students here directly involve with the phenomena and materials through various activities in which they learn by doing themselves.
- It involves exposing the students to different experiences that develop a grounding of experiences with the phenomenon.
- The teacher act as a facilitator, providing materials and guiding the students to focus on the activities.
|
| Explanation Phase |
- The learner begins to put the abstract experience and clarify their misconception through discussion in the classroom.
- The teacher will explain the concept only after students have got common experiences through collaboration.
- The degree of explanation depends on the understanding and misunderstanding of the students.
|
| Elaboration Phase |
- It provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge to new situations, which may include raising new questions and hypotheses to explore.
- The teacher guides the students in applying the concepts they have learned from the earlier three phases.
- They make connections to other related concepts and apply their understanding to the real world around them.
|
| Evaluation Phase |
- It is an ongoing diagnostic process that allows a teacher to determine the understanding of concepts and knowledge among the learners.
- The teacher here takes quizzes, tests, evaluates or diagnoses the strengths and weaknesses of the students through learning activities.
|
Hence, we can conclude that the above scenario relates to the Engagement Phase of 5 E's model of learning.
