Given:

A and B can complete a work in 12 days

They work together for 9 days after which B leaves. If A finishes the remaining work in 5 days

Solution:

Since, work done by (A + B) in 12 days = 1

⇒ The work done by (A + B) in 1 day = 1/12

⇒ The work done by (A + B) in 9 days = 9/12 = 3/4 work

⇒ The remaining work = 1/4

According to question,

1/4 work is done by A in 5 days

⇒ Total work done by A alone in 20 days

⇒ The work done by B in one day = 1/12 - 1/20 = 1/30

∴ B can alone finish the work in 30 days
