Option 2 : 42nd Amendment Act
The 42nd amendment of the Indian Constitution, also known as the mini constitution, inserted the word “socialist” into the Preamble of the Indian Constitution.
- It has been amended by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act (1976), which added three new words —socialist, secular and integrity.
- It is the only time that the Preamble has been amended.
- In the Kesavananda Bharati case (1973), the Supreme Court held that Preamble is a part of the Constitution.
- The Preamble to the Indian Constitution is based on the ‘Objectives Resolution’, drafted and moved by Pandit Nehru, and adopted by the Constituent Assembly.
