Option 1 : 8 : 38

Given:

Two pipes can fill the cistern in 24 minutes.

Drain pipe drains water at 300 liters per hour

Capacity of cistern be 120 liters.

Formula used:

If a pipe fills water in a minutes and another empties in b minutes then net part filled in 1 hour = ((1/a) – (1/b))

Calculation:

Inlet pipes fills 5 liters per minute.

In first 10 minutes 50 liters are to be filled.

Now, Drain empties 300 liters per hour = 5 liters per minute

Hence,

At the end of 11 minute cistern is filled only 45 liters are filled.

Now,

⇒ after 22 minutes 90 litres would be filled. 30 more liters will be needed in order for cistern to be completely filled.

⇒ Inlet pipes fills 5 liters per minute hence, within next 6 minutes the cistern will reach to its full capacity.

⇒ Total time = 22 + 6

⇒ Total time = 28 minutes to fill the cistern.

Hence, by 8:38 cistern will be filled
