The Baudot code or International Teleprinter Code was invented by Emile Baudot in 1870. It is binary code which uses crosses and dots. It was used for teleprinter messages instead of the Morse code and allowed to encode 25 = 32 characters efficiently. Baudot is a five-bit binary code. Originally used in wireless telegraphy as a replacement for Morse code.
