মরীচিকা হচ্ছে আলোর পূর্ণ অভ্যন্তরীণ প্রতিফলনের ফল। আলোকরশ্মি যখন ঘন মাধ্যম থেকে হালকা মাধ্যমে প্রবেশ করে তখন প্রতিসরণের দরুণ অভিলম্ব থেকে দূরে সরে যায়। আর আলো যখন ক্রান্তি কোণের চেয়ে বড় মানের কোণে বিভেদতলে আপতিত হয় তখন প্রতিসরিত না হয়ে প্রথম মাধ্যমেই ফিরে আসে। আর এভাবেই ঘটে পূর্ণ অভ্যন্তরীণ প্রতিফলন।
