মৌলিক পদার্থকে রাসানিকভাবে বিশ্লেষণ করে অন্য কোনো বস্তুতে রুপান্তরিত করা যায় না। আবার যৌগিক পদার্থকে রাসানিকভাবে বিশ্লেষণ করলে একাধিক মৌলিক পদার্থ পাওয়া যায়। চিনিকে রাসায়নিকভাবে বিশ্লেষণ করলে C, H এবং O মৌলিক পদার্থ পাওয়া যায়। তাই চিনি যৌগিক পদার্থ মৌলিক পদার্থ নয়।
