Introduction
Zinc Oxide (Microfine) is a finely ground form of zinc oxide used in various dermatological and cosmetic applications. It is a physical sunscreen and skin protectant known for its effectiveness in blocking ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Due to its smaller particle size, microfine zinc oxide offers enhanced spreadability and a more transparent appearance compared to standard zinc oxide.
Uses
Microfine Zinc Oxide is used for:
- Providing broad-spectrum sun protection by blocking both UVA and UVB rays.
- Acting as a skin protectant to prevent and treat minor skin irritations and rashes.
- Serving as a key ingredient in sunscreens, diaper rash creams, and other skincare products aimed at protecting and soothing the skin.
Mechanism of Action
Microfine Zinc Oxide works by:
- Forming a physical barrier on the skin that reflects and scatters UV radiation, preventing it from penetrating the skin.
- Providing an occlusive layer that helps to protect and soothe irritated skin.
How Long Does It Take to Work?
The protective effects of microfine zinc oxide are immediate upon application. For optimal sun protection, it is recommended to apply the product 15-30 minutes before sun exposure and to reapply every 2 hours or after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.
Absorption
Microfine zinc oxide has minimal systemic absorption. It primarily remains on the skin’s surface, where it acts as a physical blocker against UV rays. It does not penetrate deeply into the skin or enter systemic circulation to any significant extent.
Route of Elimination
Since zinc oxide is applied topically, it is largely eliminated through natural skin desquamation (shedding of the outer layer of skin). Any small amount that might be absorbed into the skin is unlikely to contribute to systemic excretion.
Dosage
Apply on the area exposed to sunlight (such as face, neck & body) at least 30 min before exposure and whenever necessary. Massage on to skin until absorbed. To ensure maximum protection, we recommend repeating the application every two hours after continuous exposure to the sun and after swimming, physical exercise (sweat or dry with towel). The dosage in topical products is typically:
- Sunscreens: 5-20% zinc oxide, depending on the desired level of sun protection.
- Skin protectants: 2-10% zinc oxide, depending on the formulation and intended use.
Administration
Microfine zinc oxide is applied topically. For sunscreens, apply a generous amount to all exposed skin areas. For skin protectants, apply as needed to affected areas. Follow specific product instructions for best results.
Side Effects
Side effects are rare but can include:
- Skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
- Dryness or a chalky appearance on the skin, particularly with higher concentrations.
Toxicity
Topical application of microfine zinc oxide is generally considered safe with minimal risk of toxicity. Ingesting large amounts may cause gastrointestinal discomfort or other issues. For topical use, discontinue if irritation occurs and consult a healthcare provider.
Precautions
Precautions include:
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
- Do not apply to broken or irritated skin.
- Perform a patch test before first use to check for sensitivity or allergic reactions.
Interaction
Interactions with other topical products are minimal. When used in conjunction with other skincare or cosmetic products, ensure that they are compatible and do not reduce the efficacy of each other. Consult a healthcare provider if using additional topical medications.
Disease Interaction
Use with caution in individuals with:
- Known hypersensitivity to zinc oxide.
- Pre-existing skin conditions that may be aggravated by topical application.
Drug Interaction
Drug interactions are unlikely with this topical agent. Consult with a healthcare provider if using other topical or systemic medications to avoid potential interactions.
Food Interactions
Food interactions are not applicable as zinc oxide is applied topically and not ingested.
Pregnancy Use
Microfine zinc oxide is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy when applied topically. Consult with a healthcare provider before using any new products during pregnancy.
Lactation Use
Microfine zinc oxide is also considered safe for use during lactation. Ensure that the product is applied properly and avoid direct contact with the baby's skin. Consult a healthcare provider if there are any concerns.
Acute Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely with topical application. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice. For topical overdose, discontinue use and wash the affected area with water.
Contraindication
Contraindications include:
- Known hypersensitivity to zinc oxide.
- Application to open wounds or severely irritated skin.
Use Direction
Apply a generous amount of the product to all exposed areas of the skin before sun exposure. For best results, apply 15-30 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every 2 hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.
Storage Conditions
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep out of reach of children. Follow specific storage instructions provided on the product label.
Volume of Distribution
Due to its topical application, the volume of distribution for microfine zinc oxide is minimal. It remains primarily on the skin’s surface and does not significantly enter systemic circulation.
Half Life
The half-life for microfine zinc oxide is not applicable as it remains on the skin's surface and is not absorbed into systemic circulation.
Clearance
Clearance occurs through natural skin turnover (desquamation). Zinc oxide applied topically does not contribute significantly to systemic clearance.
