Introduction
Salbutamol + Ipratropium (Inhaler) is a medication used to treat symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including shortness of breath, chest tightness, and wheezing. It is a combination of two bronchodilators, a beta-2 agonist (salbutamol) and an anticholinergic (ipratropium). These two medications work in different ways to alleviate the symptoms of COPD, making it easier to breathe and increase airflow to the lungs.
Uses
Salbutamol + Ipratropium (Inhaler) is used to treat airway narrowing associated with COPD. It is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol is a beta-2 agonist, which means it stimulates beta-2 receptors found on the smooth muscles in the airways to relax them. This causes the airways to open, allowing more air to enter the lungs. Ipratropium is an anticholinergic drug, which means it blocks the actions of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine at certain receptors. This decreases the activity of the muscles in the airways, causing them to relax and allowing more air to enter the lungs.
