Introduction

Hartmann’s Solution is a combination of lactated Ringer’s solution and 5% glucose solution that is used for intravenous administration. This solution is mainly used for replenishing lost fluids, maintaining electrolyte balance, and restoring acid-base balance of electrolytes. It is also used to treat dehydrated or malnourished patients.

Uses for

Hartmann’s Solution is used to restore water, electrolytes, and acid-base balance in patients that are suffering from dehydration or malnutrition. This solution is also used to restore electrolyte balance when it has been disturbed, and to treat metabolic alkalosis, hypocalcemia, hypokalemia, and hypermagnesemia. Mechanism of Action

Hartmann’s Solution is a combination of 5% dextrose, sodium chloride, and lactated Ringer’s solution. The 5% dextrose in the solution is metabolized in the body to provide energy. In burn patients the dose of Hartmann's solution according to the Parkland formula: 4 ml/kg body weight% of Body surface area (BSA) burn (e.g. for a 30% BSA burn of a person having 60 kg body weight, 4 x 60 x 30 ml = 7200 ml of Hartmann's solution would be required in 24 hours). Half of this within 8 hr, the remainder over 16 hr. The dosage of Hartmann’s Solution depends on the patient and the severity of their condition. The recommended dosage for adults is 1 liter to 2 liters of the solution per day, administered over a period of 24 hours or longer. The dosage for children should be determined by a physician.
