Mechanism of Action

Gabantin Tablet 300 mg binds to calcium channels located in the central nervous system. This action results in a reduction of the release of several neurotransmitters, including glutamate, substance P, and calcitonin gene-related peptide, which are important for controlling seizures and pain perception.

How Long Does It Take to Work?

The effects of gabapentin can begin to occur within a few hours of first taking the medication. In some cases, it may take up to two weeks for the full effects to be felt.

Absorption

Gabantin Tablet 300 mg is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1.5-2 hours.

Route of Elimination

Gabantin Tablet 300 mg is primarily eliminated via renal excretion and is eliminated in urine as unchanged drug.

Dosage

Neuropathic Pain: The treatment may be initiated as a single 300 mg dose on Day-1, than 300 mg twice on Day-2 and 300 mg thrice on Day-3. The dose can be subsequently be titrated up as needed for pain relief to a daily dose of 1800 mg (divided TID).

Epilepsy:
  • Patients over 12 years of age: the effective dose of Gabapentin is 900 to 1800 mg/day given in three divided doses. The starting dose is 300 mg three times a day.
  • Paediatric patients age 3-12 year: the starting dose should range from 10-15 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses, and the effective dose reached by upward titration over a period of approximately three days.

The recommended starting dosage of gabapentin is:

  • For partial seizures in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older: 300mg orally three times a day for the first week; the dosage can then be increased up to a maximum of 2400mg/day.
  • For post-herpetic neuralgia in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older: the starting dosage is 300mg orally, three times a day; the dosage can then be increased up to a maximum of 2400mg/day.
  • For neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older: the starting dosage is 300mg orally, followed by an escalation to 1800mg/day.

Administration

Gabantin Tablet 300 mg should be taken orally with or without food as prescribed by your doctor.

Side Effect

Common side effects of gabapentin include fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, blurred vision, dry mouth or changes in taste, constipation, nervousness, unsteadiness, insomnia, and weight gain.
