Introduction

Fluticasone propionate (brand name Flonase®) is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid medicine used to prevent and relieve the symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergies, hay fever, and non-allergic rhinitis.

Uses

Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray is used to treat symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergies such as sneezing; runny nose; itchy, watery eyes; nasal congestion; and itching of the nose. It is also used to treat non-allergic rhinitis.

Mechanism of Action

Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray works by blocking the release of certain chemical mediators from cells, including leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are chemicals that are released in response to nasal irritation that can cause inflammation and allergic symptoms. By blocking the release of these chemicals, Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray helps reduce the inflammation and related symptoms.

How Long Does it Take to Work?

Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray typically begins to work within 12 hours of use, but may take up to 2 weeks for full effect.

Absorption

Fluticasone propionate is absorbed from the nasal mucosa and is rapidly and extensively bound to plasma proteins. The bioavailability of the drug is approximately 50%.

Route of Elimination

Fluticasone propionate is eliminated primarily in the feces (up to 86%) and urine (as much as 6%) as metabolites.

Dosage

Adults & children over 12 years: 2 sprays in each nostril once a day preferably in the morning. In some cases 2 sprays into each nostril twice daily, not exceeding 4 sprays.

Children under 12 years (4-11 years): 1 spray in each nostril once a day. The maximum total daily dosage should not exceed 4 sprays. For perennial rhinitis in children, there are insufficient clinical data to recommend its use.

Children below 4 years: The safety and effectiveness of Fluticasone Propionate nasal spray in children below 4 years of age have not been established.

Patients should use Fluticasone Propionate Nasal Spray at regular intervals as directed since its effectiveness depends on its regular use. Or as directed by the physician.

Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray is available in a 50 mcg or 100 mcg strength. The recommended dosage for adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older is two puffs (50 mcg/spray) in each nostril once daily.

Administration

Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray is administered as a nasal spray. It should be used intranasally, with the spray directed towards the outside of the nose. Spray should not be used in the eyes.

Side Effects

Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray may cause side effects such as a bad taste in the mouth, nosebleeds, sore throat, and headache. More serious side effects may include increased risk of fungal infections, worsening asthma, and very severe allergic reactions.

Toxicity

Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray is generally well tolerated and not expected to cause significant toxicity. However, long-term use of high doses of fluticasone may increase the risk of certain side effects such as osteoporosis, cataracts, increased intraocular pressure, and adrenal suppression.

Precaution

Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray is not recommended for use in children under the age of 12. Patients should not use the spray if they are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Patients with diabetes, liver or kidney disease, or an active infection should not use Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray.

Interaction

Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray may interact with other drugs, supplements, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Patients should inform their doctor of all medications they are taking before beginning use of Flixonat Nasal Spray 50 mcg/spray.

Lactation Use

Contraindications
