Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Introduction

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC-Na) is a water-soluble, natural polymer derived from plant cellulose (also known as cellulose gum). It is a widely used stabilizer, emulsifier, suspending agent, thickener, film former, and binder in a variety of food, health and other products.

Uses of Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is used in a wide variety of food, health and other products. It is widely used in food products such as baking mixes, gravies, canned soups, and sauces; however, it is most often used as a thickener and stabilizer in sauces and soups, ice cream, and juice-based beverages. It is also used in non-food applications such as papermaking, paints and ceramics, coatings, hygiene and cleaning products, and textiles. In the medical field, Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is used to treat constipation and dry eye syndromes.

Mechanism of Action

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is a non-digestible, water-soluble dietary fiber. It works by increasing the amount of water in the intestine and softening the stool, helping to reduce constipation. It also helps to absorb excess fluid in the eye, reducing discomfort associated with dry eye syndrome.

How long does it take to Work?

The onset of action for constipation relief with Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is usually within 1 to 3 days. For the treatment of dry eye syndrome, relief may be felt within 1 to 2 weeks when used as directed.

Absorption

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract into the body, and is eliminated as such in the feces.

Route of Elimination

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is eliminated as such from the body in the feces.

Dosage

Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 4 times a day or as needed. The dose of Carboxymethylcellulose sodium for the treatment of constipation is 1.5 to 8.3 grams given orally one to three times daily. The recommended dosage for dry eye syndrome is 1.5 to 4.5 grams two to four times daily.

Administration

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium can be taken orally by mixing with food or liquids.

Side effect

In rare cases, Carboxymethylcellulose sodium may cause abdominal pain, flatulence and diarrhea. It may also increase stool frequency which could further worsen diarrhea.

Toxicity

No adverse effects have been reported from Carboxymethylcellulose sodium at the suggested doses.

Precaution

Patients should discuss with their doctor or pharmacist risk of taking Carboxymethylcellulose sodium with other medications (e.g. antacids, warfarin) and any other potential interactions or side effects.

Interaction

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium may interact with other medications, such as antacids and warfarin.

Disease Interaction

Drug Interaction

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium may interact with other drugs, such as antacids and warfarin.

Food Interactions

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium does not interact with food products, however, it may affect the absorption of other drugs taken with it.

Pregnancy Use

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to lack of adequate studies to assess safety.

Lactation Use

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is not recommended for use during breastfeeding due to lack of adequate studies to assess safety.

Acute Overdose

No serious side effects have been reported from overdose of Carboxymethylcellulose sodium. Overdose may cause flatulence, abdominal pain, and increased urgency to defecate.

Contraindication

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is contraindicated in patients with difficulty swallowing or who are unable to use the medication as instructed.

Use Direction

Carboxymethylcellulose sodium can be taken with or without food. It is important to follow the instructions of the doctor or pharmacist when administering this medication.

Storage Condition
