Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used to treat certain eye conditions, including open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension (high pressure in the eye). It decreases the pressure inside the eye by slowing the production of natural fluid in the eye.

Uses For

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% is used to treat elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who are intolerant of or insufficiently responsive to other intraocular pressure-lowering medications.

Mechanism of Action

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that works by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase in the ciliary body of the eye, which reduces the production of aqueous humor, leading to decreased intraocular pressure (IOP).

How Long Does It Take to Work?

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% usually takes up to 8 hours to begin to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP). The full reduction usually occurs within 24 hours of administration.

Absorption

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% is rapidly and completely absorbed from the eye when administered as eye drops. The maximum plasma concentration occurs within 1 hour after administration.

Route of Elimination

When administered topically as eye drops, brinzolamide is rapidly and completely absorbed, and is eliminated primarily through urinary excretion of unchanged drug. The elimination half-life is approximately 8 hours.

Dosage

Shake well before use. Insert 1 drop in the affected eye(s) three times daily. It may be used concomitantly with other topical ophthalmic products to lower intraocular pressure. If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is being used, the drugs should be administered at least ten minutes apart.

Pediatric Use: One drop in the affected eye(s) 2 times daily in pediatric patient (4 weeks to 5 years age)

Geriatric Use: No overall differences in safety or effectiveness have been observed between elderly and younger patients.

The recommended dosage of brinzolamide is 1 drop in each affected eye once daily. The drops should be administered in the morning; if more than one topical ophthalmic drug is used, administering brinzolamide last is recommended.

Administration

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% is administered topically as eye drops. To administer, tilt the head back and pull the lower lid down to form a pouch. Squeeze 1 drop into the pouch and close the eye for a few minutes before blinking. Repeat in the other eye if needed.

Side Effect

Common side effects of brinzolamide include: blurred vision, burning/stinging/irritation, dry eyes, corneal erosion, headache, flu-like symptoms, eye redness, and tearing/watering of the eyes. In rare cases, brinzolamide may also cause hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis.

Toxicity

When administered topically as eye drops, brinzolamide is generally well tolerated in the eye. There have been no reports of systemic toxicity or systemic side-effects from brinzolamide administration.

Precaution

Before using brinzolamide, tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had allergies, asthma, or any other medical conditions. Tell your healthcare provider all the medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Do not take any new medicines without first talking to your healthcare provider. Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant. Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breast-feeding, or plan to breast-feed. Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% passes into breast milk.

Interaction

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% may interact with other drugs, such as certain anticoagulants, cimetidine, and proton-pump inhibitors. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Do not start or stop any medicine without first talking to your healthcare provider.

Disease Interaction

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components. It should be used with caution in patients with severe renal impairment.

Drug Interaction

Food Interaction

No specific food-related interactions are known for brinzolamide. However, you should still talk to your healthcare provider before taking any food or beverage while taking this medication.

Pregnancy Use

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% is contraindicated in pregnant women. All women of childbearing age must use effective birth control while taking this medication.

Lactation Use

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% is contraindicated in lactating women. Women currently lactating must not use this medication.

Acute Overdose

There is limited information available on the acute overdose of brinzolamide. Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, confusion, and bradycardia.

Contraindication

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% is contraindicated in patients: with known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components; with severe renal impairment; who are pregnant or lactating; and with contact lenses.

Use Directions

Azopres Ophthalmic Suspension 1% should be used as directed by your healthcare provider. It is usually given as one drop into the affected eye(s) once daily in the morning. If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is used, administering brinzolamide last is recommended.
