Anafranil Tablet 25 mg is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat depression and other psychiatric disorders. It is also used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Anafranil Tablet 25 mg works by blocking certain chemical messengers in the brain that affect mood and emotion. It works by altering serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the brain.

Mechanism Of Action

Anafranil Tablet 25 mg blocks the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. This increases the amount of these two neurotransmitters available to be used by neurons, which in turn leads to an improved mood and well being.

How Long Does It Take To Work?

Anafranil Tablet 25 mg usually takes 4-6 weeks for its full effect. However, some people may notice some improvement of their symptoms within a few days of starting the drug.

Absorption

Anafranil Tablet 25 mg is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and reaches its maximum concentration in about three hours. It has a bioavailability of 84%.

Route Of Elimination

Anafranil Tablet 25 mg is metabolized in the liver by deamination and hydroxylation and is primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites.

Dosage

Initial dose is 25 mg at bed time about a week, gradual increase of dose should not be exceeded more than 150 mg per day in adult and 75 mg per day in elderly patient. Dose can be given as divided form to reduce gastrointestinal disturbances. Not recommended for children.

The usual initial adult dose of Anafranil Tablet 25 mg is 25 mg given 3 or 4 times daily. The daily dose may then be increased by 25-50 mg every week in divided doses up to a maximum of 250 mg/day. It can also be given as a single daily dose, taken at bedtime.

Administration

Anafranil Tablet 25 mg is provided as tablets and capsules that can be taken orally. It should be taken with food or a full glass of water to reduce the risk of stomach discomfort.

Side Effect

Common side effects of Anafranil Tablet 25 mg include fatigue, drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision. More serious side effects can include seizures, difficulty breathing, chest pain, fast or irregular heart beat, and confusion.
