Alivio Tablet 250 mg Introduction

Terbinafine hydrochloride is an antifungal medication used to treat certain types of fungal infections of the skin, fingernails, and toenails. It is also sometimes used to treat ringworm (tinea corporis), a fungal skin infection. It belongs to a class of drugs called allylamines, which work by preventing fungi from growing and spreading.

Uses For

Terbinafine hydrochloride is used to treat a variety of fungal infections, including athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Mechanism Of Action

Terbinafine hydrochloride works by inhibiting the growth of certain fungal cells and preventing them from spreading. The drug binds to a specific enzyme in the fungal cell wall, preventing the synthesis of ergosterol, a component of the cell membrane. By preventing the cell wall from forming, the drug prevents the fungus from growing and spreading.

How Long Does It Take To Work?

Terbinafine hydrochloride usually takes 1-2 weeks to start working. However, it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions and to continue taking the medication, even if no improvement is noticed.

Absorption

Terbinafine hydrochloride is almost completely absorbed when taken orally. The maximum concentration in the blood is usually reached within 1-2 hours after taking a single dose.

Route Of Elimination

Terbinafine hydrochloride is primarily eliminated through the kidneys, with up to 90% of the drug being excreted unchanged in the urine.

Dosage

Terbinafine tablet:

For the treatment of fingernail onychomycosis: Terbinafine 250 mg (one tablet), once daily for 6 weeks.
For the treatment of toenail onychomycosis: Terbinafine 250 mg (one tablet), once daily for 12 weeks.
The optimal clinical effect is seen some months after mycological cure and cessation of treatment. This is related to the period required for the outgrowth of healthy nail.

Terbinafine granules:

Body Weight: <25 kg: 125 mg/day up to 6 weeks
Body Weight: 25-35 kg: 187.5 mg/day up to 6 weeks
Body Weight: >35 kg: 250 mg/day up to 6 weeks

Terbinafine cream: Terbinafine cream can be applied once or twice daily. Cleanse and dry the affected areas thoroughly before application of the terbinafine cream. Apply the cream to the affected skin and the surrounding area in a thin layer and rub in lightly. In the case of intertriginous infections (submammary, interdigital, intergluteal, inguinal) the application may be covered with a gauze strip, especially at night. The likely durations of treatment are as follows:

Tinea corporis, cruris: 1 to 2 weeks
Tinea pedis: 1 week
Cutaneous candidiasis: 2 weeks
Pityriasis versicolor: 2 weeks

Relief of the clinical symptoms usually occurs within a few days. Irregular use or premature discontinuation of treatment carries the risk of recurrence. If there are no signs of improvement after two weeks, the diagnosis should be verified.

Terbinafine 1% Spray: This spray is applied once or twice daily, depending on the indication. The affected areas should be cleansed and dried thoroughly before application of this spray. A sufficient amount of solution should be applied to wet the treatment area(s) thoroughly.

Tinea pedis: once a day,1 week
Tinea corporis/cruris: once a day,1 week
Pityriasis versicolor: twice a day, 1 week

Relief of clinical symptoms usually occurs within a few days. If there are no signs of improvement after two weeks the diagnosis should be verified. The usual adult dosage of Terbinafine hydrochloride is 250 mg (one tablet) taken once daily. The dose may be increased to 500 mg (two tablets) if the infection is severe or if the infection does not respond to the lower dose.

Administration

Terbinafine hydrochloride should be taken orally, with or without food. It is important to take the medication exactly as prescribed and for the full course of treatment.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Terbinafine hydrochloride include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and headache. It may also cause dizziness, drowsiness, skin rash, or itching.

Toxicity

Terbinafine hydrochloride is generally safe and well tolerated. However, it can be toxic in high doses and can cause serious side effects, such as liver damage, skin rash, and allergic reactions.

Precautions

Interaction

Terbinafine hydrochloride should not be taken with other medications, including antacids, anticoagulants, and diuretics.

Disease Interaction

Patients with kidney, liver, or lung diseases should use Terbinafine hydrochloride with caution, as it may worsen their condition. Patients with diabetes should also monitor their blood sugar levels more closely while taking this medication.

Drug Interaction

Food Interactions
