The ratio of the speed of police and thief is 6 : 5. A thief seeing a policeman from a distance of 200 m starts running at a speed of 15 km/hr. The policeman gives chase immediately with his speed and the thief is caught. In how much time (in minutes) the police will catch the thief?

The ratio of the speed of police and thief is 6 : 5. A thief seeing a policeman from a distance of 200 m starts running at a speed of 15 km/hr. The policeman gives chase immediately with his speed and the thief is caught. In how much time (in minutes) the police will catch the thief? Correct Answer 4

Given:

Ratio of speed of police and thief = 6 : 5

Speed of thief = 15 km/hr

Distance between thief and police = 200 m

Formula Used:

Distance = Time × Speed

Relative speed of A and B running in same direction = SpeedA – SpeedB

Calculation:

Speed of thief = 15 km/hr

⇒ 5 units = 15 km/hr

⇒ 6 units = 18 km/hr

Relative speed of Police w.r.t to thief = (18 – 15) km/hr

⇒ 3 km/hr

⇒ 3 × (5/18) m/s

⇒ 5/6 m/s

Time taken to catch the thief = Distance/(Relative Speed)

⇒ 200/(5/6)

⇒ 240 seconds

⇒ 4 minutes

∴ the police will catch the thief in 4 minutes.
