Which among the following option is correct with respect to movement of wind patterns? 1. Winds are deflected anti clockwise and clockwise in northern and southern hemisphere respectively due to coriolis force. 2. Southern hemisphere has higher coriolis force due to less landmass.
Which among the following option is correct with respect to movement of wind patterns? 1. Winds are deflected anti clockwise and clockwise in northern and southern hemisphere respectively due to coriolis force. 2. Southern hemisphere has higher coriolis force due to less landmass. Correct Answer 1 only
The correct answer is option 1, i.e 1 only.
- The rotation of the earth about its axis affects the direction of the wind. This force is called the Coriolis force. It has great impact on the direction of wind movement.
- Due to the earth’s rotation, winds do not cross the isobars at right angles as the pressure gradient force directs, but get deflected from their original path.
- This deviation is the result of the earth’s rotation and is called the Coriolis effect.
- It is responsible for air being pulled to the right (counterclockwise) in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left (clockwise) in the Southern Hemisphere. Hence, Option 1 is correct.
- The Coriolis Effect is the observed curved path of moving objects relative to the surface of the Earth.
- The Coriolis force is directly proportional to the angle of latitude. It is maximum at the poles and is absent at the equator.
- It is thus equal for the same degree of latitude in both the hemispheres. Hence, Option 2 is NOT correct.
