Introduction

Trifudin (also known as TFT or Viroptic) is an antiviral drug used to treat certain types of viral eye infections, including herpes simplex virus, human immunodeficiency virus, and varicella-zoster virus. It is an antiviral nucleoside analog with activity against DNA and RNA viruses.

Uses

Trifudin is used to treat viral keratitis, which is an infection of the cornea caused by certain viruses, including herpes simplex virus and varicella-zoster virus. It can also be used off-label to treat other antiviral indications, such as adenoviral conjunctivitis, and dendritic ulcers of the cornea.

Mechanism of Action

Trifudin inhibits viral DNA and RNA synthesis by extending and terminating DNA/RNA chain growth. This prevents affected viruses from replicating and spreading further.

How Long Does it Take to Work?

Some individuals may experience relief from symptoms as quickly as one day after beginning trifluridine, however the maximum effect usually occurs after about 7-10 days of therapy.

Absorption

Trifudin is quickly absorbed from the cornea when applied topically.

Route of Elimination

Trifudin is excreted mainly in the urine as metabolites (breakdown products).

Dosage

Trifudin is available in 0.25% and 1% eye drops. It is recommended to be applied 3-6 times a day for 7-10 days in cases of viral keratitis. The drops should be applied to the affected eye or eyes, one to two drops at a time, until the entire dose has been administered. Avoid touching the container tip to the affected eye, as this will contaminate the solution with fungi or bacteria that could cause an additional infection.

Administration

Trifudin eye drops should be applied topically to the affected eye or eyes, one to two drops at a time, 3-6 times per day for 7-10 days. The drops should be carefully administered, avoiding contact with the container tip.
