Gentabac HC is a combination of two medicines. Gentamicin is an antibiotic which works by killing bacteria. Hydrocortisone acetate is a steroid which works by reducing inflammation and swelling. This combination medication is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye or ear that are accompanied by inflammation and/or swelling.

Mechanism of Action

The combination of gentamicin and hydrocortisone further enhances the therapeutic efficacy of the medication by the actions of the individual components. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic which works by binding to a site on the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacterial cells in order to inhibit protein synthesis and killing bacteria. Hydrocortisone acetate is a type of corticosteroid which works by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine and leukotrienes and causes anti-inflammatory effects and reduces swelling.

How Long Does it Take to Work?

The effects of Gentabac HC start appearing within a few hours. Depending on the severity of the infection and individual response, one may need to take multiple doses over a period of time for the desired results.

Gentabac HC is a topical application and hence the medicine is absorbed through the skin. The medicine is eliminated through the metabolism in the body.
